Div - 16 (2017-18 School Year)
We made it! After a long and busy second term we all get a well-deserved week off to rest and prepare for an exciting final term. This afternoon all three classes convened in the band room to have a little impromptu "talent show." I must say that we have some very talented students, and it was an awesome way to cap off our week. Over the break I have not assigned any homework, but I do want all of the kids to have chosen a book for their independent novel study and have read at least 3/4 of it by the time they return on March 26th. Lastly, I will be away on a family trip to Germany over the break, so Mr. Brian Saunderson will be in for me for the first two weeks back. If you have any concerns or questions for me I will still be accessing my email, but due to the 9 hour time difference I may not get back to you until the next day. Wishing everyone a lovely spring break :)
AGENDA: Novel Study = Choose a novel and read at least 75% of it over the break. PAC Fun Fair = Our class' theme is "ALL THINGS SPORTS" -Don't forget to think about and start bringing in items for our class basket after the break. The fair is scheduled for Thursday, April 12th, so baskets need to be filled by no later than Tuesday, April 10th.

Spring Break may be on the minds of many right now, but we still have some important basketball related things going on right now. First of all, a big congratulations to the Tier 1 Boys team who has advanced to the city finals for the second consecutive year. The boys will be taking on the Dufferin Dragons tomorrow at Brock Middle School. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30pm. Come out and cheer them on. Secondly, tomorrow is the first day of the annual NCAA College Basketball tournament, also known as "March Madness." For fun, I have organized a bracket challenge pool (for students who are interested), to fill out a bracket and try and correctly predict as many games as they can. The "entry fee" for this tournament is a candy/chocolate bar (just one each - some of them were plotting to say they needed to bring two), and after the final game on April 2nd, we will determine the grand champion, who will also get to keep all of the candy! Side Note: Last year the champion was a grade 7 girl who knew nothing about college basketball, and who's strategy was based upon who she thought had the nicer uniforms :) AGENDA: Math: Hine = Quiz Friday (Constructing Triangles, Sorting Polygons, Perimeter, and Area) Powrie = None Clarke = Practice Sheet (If not done) ADDITIONAL ITEMS: -Olympic Scrapbook due Friday -Science = "Natural Selection" Work sheet (if not done) -Coding with Max - Advance to Level 7 in "Coding Combat" Game -PAC Fundraiser Basket - Please remember to bring in items for our class basket after Spring Break. Our class theme is "ALL THINGS SPORTS" Whew! What a long week that was! This week has been named "The Week of Field Trips," as we first of all enjoyed two days of skiing on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday we got to cheer on the grade 7's as they performed three pieces at the High Country Festival, and then finally we went skating Thursday afternoon with our buddy class. Thank you to all you parents who came and helped out, and also to the parents who helped remind/get your kids organized, etc. Even though we packed in a lot this week, I would say that it was a success overall. One more week until Spring Break...

Ms. Clarke should be back and ready to run band next Monday at 8:15 as per usual. -Olympic Scrapbook should be finished and handed in by next Friday, March 16th. This afternoon we watched the first half of the Disney classic "Cool Runnings." It's hard to believe, but it has been 30 years since the Jamaican bobsled team came out of nowhere to compete at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. As we near the end of our study of the Olympics, students will be using a venn diagram to compare some of the similarities and differences of the 1988 and 2018 Winter Olympics. One interesting fact: The 1988 Olympics was the first time Jamaica had competed in the bobsled at the Winter Olympics, and 2018 was the first year Jamaica sent a female team to compete in bobsled also.

This cold-snap, in particular, has meant we've been inside for the past two days during recess in lunch. We heard the last of our speeches, with many students doing an excellent job of taking feedback and incorporating suggestions from previous presenters to make their speeches even better. We are also nearing the end of our literature circles, as students should be finishing their novels before next Wednesday. Lastly, the winter olympics have provided an excellent segue into great discussions about diversity, as well as providing entertainment and national pride. I look forward to seeing students' scrapbooks, which we will be continuing to work for at least another week before I assign a due date.
